VETERANS FOR PEACE
March 19, 2005
General William Tecumsah Sherman said war is hell. General Smedley Butler said war is a racket. Former secretary of state Henry Kissinger said the military are just dumb stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy.
I have here the names of my friend, Leonard Ericksen and my uncle, Jerry Davis who are on the Vietnam Nam Memorial Wall. Is it going to take 58,000 names on another war memorial before we wake up?
For my Vietnam veterans, hamburger hill is not a video game or a movie but the stark reality of death and killing that is with them every day of their lives in dreams, flashbacks, and panic attacks leading to addictions and homelessness.
THE ARMY THAT CAN DEFEAT TERRORISM doesn’t wear uniforms, or drive Humvees, or call in air-strikes. It doesn’t have a high command, or high security, or a high budget. The army that can defeat terrorism does battle quietly, clearing minefields and vaccinating children. It undermines military dictatorships and military lobbyists. It subverts sweatshops and special interests. Where people feel powerless, it helps them organize for change, and where people are powerful, it reminds them of their responsibility.
We must comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. We will not go away.
LETS SUPPORT OUR TROOPS AND BRING THEM HOME NOW!
