Third Friday of every month, Take Action! - Iraq Moratorium
The slow-motion train wreck that is the occupation of Iraq grows daily more of a nightmare. In 2006 America voted to bring it to an end. But our politicians have failed to grasp the strain on our military and the depth to which America's influence in the world has fallen. We must force them and our media to recognize just how angry America is, and how massive the anti-war sentiment in this country has become.
The Iraq Moratorium will be an escalating monthly series of actions demanding an end to the war. Starting on Friday, September 21 and on the third Friday of every month thereafter, we will take the time to show our President and Congress that our troops must be brought home, now!

Nuclear Power and Nuclear Waste Panels

Next week, the stars will align to bring two national experts on nuclear power, weapons, and waste to the Salt Lake area and three opportunities for you to hear them speak. Dr. Arjun Makhijani, president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, and Christopher Paine, nuclear program director for the Natural Resources Defense Council, will both be in town speaking at the following events.
April 1st: Nuclear power debate and waste panel
It was supposed to be the debate of the century: Rep. Aaron Tilton (R-Springville), Viagra salesman by day¹, nuclear powerbroker by moonlight, and Dr. Arjun Makhijani, national nuclear expert and president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, together in one room debating the future of nuclear power in Utah.
That is, until we heard today that Rep. Tilton decided to back out, three days before the scheduled event. He did not provide a reason, nor a replacement.
But Utah Valley State College has lined up a suitable replacement for Rep. Tilton and the debate will go on as planned.

    Peace Vigils Around the U.S.

    April 1, 2008 - Fossil Fools day
On April 1, 2008 young people from around the world are rising up to show the world that we refuse to fool around with climate change and our future. Led by the Energy Action Coalition, Canadian Youth Climate Coalition, and Rising Tide, on April 1 we will take collective action to turn the tide away from fossil fuel dependence and towards a clean and just energy revolution. On this historic day of action we will tear down the dirty energy that stands in our way, while building the better world we need.
    We Are Fed Up
We have had enough of fossil fuel tomfoolery - empty promises and lackluster leadership from our governments and dirty energy companies. We have had enough of coal companies that destroy communities, poison our air, and spew global warming pollution. We are sick of oil and car companies keeping us dangerously addicted to oil. We know that tar sands development in Canada must be stopped. And we will kick every politician out of office who refuses to show bold, political leadership in fighting climate change. Join us in making April 1 a day the fossil fuel industry never forgets! Sign-up for an action in your community today.
    We Are Hopeful
Climate change is our generation's biggest challenge, but also our biggest opportunity. We can make sure that as we move away from dangerous fossil fuels we are building not only a cleaner, but also a more just future. We will help ensure that the clean energy revolution leaves no one behind and creates hundreds of thousands of new, green jobs. Join us in building a more just future. Plan an action to spur green job creation in your community today.
    We Are Powerful
Together we can build a more just and sustainable future. We are calling on communities across Canada and the US to show the fossil fuel industry and bad politicians that we mean business by organizing a Fossil Fools Day action today. Ideas include, but are by no means limited to: rallies at gas stations or representative offices, Critical Mass bike rides, office occupations, Billionaire's for Tar Sands/Coal demonstrations, spank the bank visits, high-powered projections of solutions on the side of dirty energy factories, Board of Trustees meeting take-overs, hold a clean energy camp at a dirty energy site, do solar installations, make spoof videos and websites, offer alternative, clean energy bus rides, do some coal mining of your own at a coal company's headquarters...
This April 1st join with people around the world to end the fossil fuel age and stand up for a new energy future. Get more information by visiting the website now.
    See you in the streets!

    Kent State update?
On May 1st we're going to be holding an afternoon concert on campus to gain student participation on the fourth. On the 2nd and 3rd, the Kent chapter of Anti-Racsist Action is holding a conference on the Kent campus focusing on sexism and the war in Iraq, and how women are affected both in the U.S. and overseas. Kent State Antiwar Committee (KSAWC) will be leading one or two discussions during the conference, though the topics are not yet certain. On the evening of the 3rd, the May 4th Task Force will be holding an event but exactly what it will be has yet to be decided. The annual candlelight vigil will then begin on the evening of the 3rd and continue through the morning of May 4th until the annual commemoration ceremony begins at noon. Following the ceremony, KSAWC's main action will begin, which is the antiwar march across campus and through downtown Kent. This is the part we are trying to build for most. Once the march reaches downtown Kent, we will be joining forces with a "Peace Parade" being put together by another local organizer. The Peace Parade is in honor of Bill Shultz, a Kent councilman who recently passed away. He was a supporter of many progressive issues in Kent and was arrested alongside the students at the Tent City protests. Anyway, his last wish was to have a New Orleans style wake, so his good friend Jeff St. Clair is putting together the Peace Parade with a Dixieland band and all, which will join us in the march through Kent. After the march there will be a speak- out.
If your organization is at all interested in offering an endorsement in support of our actions please feel free to contact me.
Thanks. We hope to see you in May.
In solidarity, Lisa Mirkovich Kent State Antiwar Committee (KSAWC)
